Afer the Church has just celebrated the great solemn days of All Saints and All Souls, we have a very vivid contrast in the ways of thinking about those who die. The story from Maccabees has brothers willing to die and entrust themselves to the mercy of God and to life with Him forever. Meanwhile the Sadducees in the Gospel, who do not believe in the resurrection are found questioning this teaching of Jesus. Though the brothers in Maccabees would not have heard Jesus’ teaching of the resurrection, they have come to believe that God can do anything and can bring them to eternal life with Him, as long as they obey His commands. This should very well be our position, as we have heard Jesus teach this and believe that He has risen from the dead. This is why All Saints and All Souls days are so important for us to celebrate. We pray for all who have died, that life eternal may be granted to them, and we call upon the Saints in heaven to intercede for us and help us on our own journey to heaven. The Catholic Christian goal of life is to be a saint, which means to be in heaven. May we always believe in the resurrection and strive for the ultimate goal of life eternal with our God!
