The third Sunday of Advent in Latin is called Gaudete Sunday as the focus of the celebration brings us into the mindset of rejoicing in the coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ coming into this world changes everything. We have a sort of new eyes and ears to see Jesus in the creation around us and in the people we encounter and to hear His voice within us guiding us to eternal glory with Him. St. James tells us to have patience and a stillness about us, so that as the days go by, we will fnd the presence of Christ growing stronger and brighter in our midst. We all know the great works of Jesus: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. John the Baptist couldn’t do these great works but spoke of the one who was to come that could, Jesus Christ. Jesus continues to do these great things in our world. Jesus acknowledges that John the Baptist, while out in the desert, was God’s messenger preparing the people for His coming. May we each day be messengers of Jesus to our world and cry out, “Lord, come and save us!”
