Today is Palm “Passion” Sunday, the beginning of the most holiest week of celebrations in the Church’s liturgical life. The crowds welcome Jesus into Jerusalem as if a king and very soon they turn their back on Him and cry out for His crucifixion. The Prophet Isaiah speaks of how Jesus is willing to hand Himself over to them and allow them to beat, spit on Him, and mock Him. Jesus does so because He knows the Lord God is His help, that the Father will never abandon Him. St. Paul reminds us of how Jesus emptied Himself by taking on our human likeness, though without any sin and being God, humbled Himself and was obedient even unto death. It is for this reason that every knee should bend and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, all to the glory of God the Father. As Christians we participate in the reading of the Passion, this year according to the Gospel of Mark. May we enter into the story of the truth of our salvation and be more actively involved this Holy Week by participating in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening, the Good Friday service and the Easter Vigil and Easter morning celebrations.
