The Letter to the Hebrews today reminds us of the effectiveness of God’s Word, that it is indeed living and effective, sharper than a two-edged sword, penetrating our hearts to move us to action. As the Book of Wisdom tells us, we are to pray for prudence and wisdom that come to us from God as true gifts that we each need to live out the Gospel and follow Jesus more faithfully. Just like the man that runs up to Jesus in the Gospel desiring to know what he needs to do to inherit eternal life, he is told by Jesus to live the Commandments, as Jesus tells us to do the same. But Jesus also tells that man to do more, as He tells us, that living out the commandments is not enough but to go and care for others, especially the poor. I pray that as you ponder the message in the readings this week, that they will become something more than just words on a piece of paper or those we hear but become words that we live by each day, so we may inherit eternal life with God.
