Jesus in teaching us and His disciples doesn’t change anything of the old law but only pushes it further for the greater glory of God. The Levitical law found in the Old Testament tells the people to not bear hatred for others in their hearts, to take no revenge and cherish no grudge against anyone, but one should love your neighbor as yourself, because God is Holy. Jesus pushes this law or commandment by telling us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us, then we will be true children of our heavenly Father. Jesus points out to us that the sun will rise, and the rain will fall upon all people, whether they choose to be just or unjust, God provides for all. But those who have chosen God and strive to live in His ways, they will receive the better part. The unjust know how to do good as well as the just, but the just do it for the right reasons, to please God and bring greater glory to Him. We belong to Christ and Christ to God, the Lord who is kind and merciful. Let us live as we have been called and prepared in faith! A reminder that Lent begins this Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, a day of fast and abstinence and to be reminded we are sinners in need of God’s forgiveness and mercy.
