Christ the King Catholic Montessori School is fortunate to have the ability to support the child who is making the transition from the Children's House to the elementary school level. The Lower Elementary Montessori classroom heavily builds off of the strong Children's House foundation; however, the environment changes to meet the elementary child. The Lower Elementary classroom supports ages 6-9 as these children are on the second plane of development. Children in this plane are very social individuals who strive for independence, responsibility, understanding of purpose (purpose of themselves in the world as well as the purpose behind everyday objects), and fairness or equality.
The Lower Elementary classroom uses natural tones and wooden shelves to divide the environment into six curriculum areas: Mathematics, Geometry, Language, History, Geography, and Zoology/Botany. The Children's House emphasizes the use of practical life lessons as a central focus whereas in the Lower Elementary, practical life is woven into the core curriculum areas as well as art and sensorial. The colorful materials are placed on shelves to add appeal and invite the child to the sensorial experience the work has to offer!
The Montessori program follows the way of the child on their personal academic journey. The guide presents lessons either individually or to a small group based on academic needs. Once the child receives a lesson, the child is given the choice of how to practice the new material based on interests and academics. Some examples may include composing a written piece, exploration through research, producing a model, use of problem cards, etc. This allows the child to be driven with independence and to develop problem solving skills for the future. The guide follows the child through the use of careful, purposeful materials in a scope and sequence pattern.
